At the food and drink hub we are on a mission for zero wastage and give away all our surplus food to charity instead of throwing it in the bin. It’s not often mega amounts but it’s better off going to people who really need it so we donate what we can to the Falkirk Food bank. Legally, we are unable to donate food past its ‘use-by’ date but can offer food that is safe to be eaten and past its best-before date and that’s what we try do.
In the UK an estimated 15 million of tonnes of food is wasted each year, at a cost of £5bn. Which is a huge amount to waste especially with people out there who desperately need it. Britain wastes more food than any other European country, according to a recent study of which 80 per cent is avoidable. Many of this is company from Supermarkets and Households however if we all do our part then we can make wastage a thing of the past.
