August: In Season This Month

To mark the last month of our Scottish summer before we proceed into autumn, we have put together some In Season produce for you to get your hands on what will taste its best this month. 

 

VEGETABLES

Here in Scotland, we always have a great selection of vegetables available. However, we are nearing the end of our "summer", which pretty much just consisted of rain, and the following vegetables will be at their best:

Beetroot, Broad Beans, Broccoli, Cabbage, Cauliflower, Celery, Chillies, Courgettes, Cucumber, Leeks, Lettuce, Onions, Peas (shell and sugar snap), Radish, Runner Beans, Summer Squash, Swiss Chard, Turnips.

 

FRUITS

August will see another abundance of berries overtaking our menus and recipes. It has been Summer Berries and Fruits month for Scotland’s Year of Food and Drink in July but now we have some additions to the list in August.

Best of fruits this month: Apples, Blackcurrants, Blueberries, Gooseberries, Pears, Plums, Raspberries, Redcurrants, Strawberries, Tayberries, Tomatoes.

 

MEAT

In season meat this month includes venison and woodpigeon, two products which we sell from two mighty Game producers from Scotland; Ardgay Game and the Smoked Game Company. You can find their products on our online shop HERE. Products include venison sausages with black pepper, venison sausages with sweet chilli, beech wood smoked wood pigeon breasts and much, much more.

FISH

It is no secret that Scotland has some of the best seafood available; we have a feeling it may be due to our extremely cold waters! But this month these different types of fish and shellfish will taste their best:

Cockles, Cod, Coley, Crab, Farmed Halibut, Farmed Rainbow Trout, Farmed Salmon, Haddock, Hake, Herring, Lemon Sole, Ling, Lobster, Mackerel, Monkfish, Mussels, Plaice, Pollack, Razor Clams, Scallops, Sea Bass, Sea Trout, Skate, Squid, Turbot, Wild Salmon, Winkles, Whiting.
